Mango Markets Oracle Manipulation — October 2022
A trader pumped the MNGO oracle on a thin Solana spot market, used the inflated collateral to borrow $114M from the protocol, then later argued in court that the manoeuvre constituted legitimate trading.
Mango Markets was a Solana-based decentralised exchange that allowed users to post collateral and trade spot and perpetual derivatives on margin. Collateral was valued through on-chain oracle feeds aggregating thin spot-market prices.
On 11 October 2022, Avraham Eisenberg used one account to open a large MNGO-perpetual long position and a second account to take the short side, providing the liquidity. He then placed buy orders for MNGO on the spot markets that fed the oracle, lifting the oracle price from approximately $0.038 to a peak of $0.91 — a ~24x move on volume that no organic market would have absorbed. The oracle-fed valuation of his long-side collateral reached approximately $400 million.
Against that inflated collateral, Eisenberg borrowed $114 million of USDC, BTC, ETH, SOL and other assets — draining the Mango protocol's lending side. He withdrew the borrowed assets and then approached the Mango DAO with a proposal: return a portion as a "bug bounty" in exchange for the DAO agreeing not to pursue criminal or civil charges. The DAO, with most of its treasury in his control, agreed.
US prosecutors did not consider themselves bound by the DAO's agreement. Eisenberg was arrested in Puerto Rico in December 2022 and charged with commodities fraud and market manipulation. His defence — that the manoeuvre was legitimate trading because every transaction was permitted by the protocol's code — was rejected. He was convicted on three counts in April 2024.
